Minister Chanthivong is considered an up-and-coming member of Chris Minns’ cabinet, holding portfolios in Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Corrections, Industry and Trade, and Innovation, Science and Technology, in addition to Building.
A long-time local of the Macarthur region after emigrating to Australia from Laos as a child, Chanthivong studied commerce and economics at the University of Sydney and later attended the London School of Economics and Political Science. He has over 13 years’ experience as an economist in addition to his extensive service at Campbelltown City Council, to which he was first elected in 2004 before becoming mayor over 2011-12.
Chanthivong has advocated on the importance of public education and addressing local issues, including matters of accessibility and quality of life. He is particularly popular as Member for Macquarie Fields, having substantially increased his winning margin and consistently attracted over 50% of first-preference votes at each election since entering parliament in 2015.
