REFORM + PRECINCT TRACKER
Sharpe is one of NSW Labor’s longest-serving representatives in the Legislative Council, having been first appointed in 2005. In addition to her Environment portfolio, Sharpe is Minister for Energy, Minister for Climate Change, Minister for Heritage and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. She has keen interests in the environment, LGBTI advocacy, women and women in politics, affordable housing and mining and energy policy, and is a strong proponent of community representation in parliament.
Prior to entering politics, Sharpe studied food technology at UNSW where she was heavily involved in student politics, eventually becoming president of the National Union of Students. During this time, she campaigned against reforms to tertiary education by the Keating government and the Victorian government’s plan to introduce voluntary student unionism. She later became an advisor to a NSW state minister in areas of education and training, community services, homelessness, drugs & alcohol, juvenile justice and young people, and served a term as a councillor at Marrickville Council.
Sharpe is a senior figure in NSW Labor Left and holds membership in Rainbow Labor, the Labor Environmental Action Network, Labor for Refugees and Labor for Innovation. Sharpe is highly respected across all major parties in NSW and is a key member of Premier Chris Minns’ leadership team.
