NSW Ministerial Reshuffle V2

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's new Cabinet will be sworn in this afternoon, following the unveiling of a revamped ministry yesterday.

The major reshuffle has seen a number of significant changes. Former Minister for Planning Rob Stokes will move to the Education portfolio, while former Minister for Family & Community Services and Social Housing Brad Hazzard will become Minister for Health and Medical Research. Minister Hazzard's appointment to the Health portfolio fills the vacancy created by former Minister Jillian Skinner, who last week announced that she will retire from parliament.

Many media commentators have noted the addition of a new role, Minister for Counter Terrorism, to the ministry. This role will be taken by Member for Baulkham Hills David Elliott, who will also retain his existing roles as Minister for Corrections and Veterans Affairs. Former Minister for Roads, Maritime & Freight Duncan Gay will be replaced by fellow National Party MP Melinda Pavey, following his resignation from the portfolio yesterday.

Other notable changes include the swapping of portfolios between former Attorney General Gabrielle Upton and former Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mark Speakman. Minister Speakman is well qualified for his new role, as a senior counsel and former partner at a top tier law firm. Minister Upton also adds Local Government to her new portfolio, taking over from Paul Toole, who now becomes Minister for Lands & Forestry and Racing.

In total, seven new MPs and MLCs have been promoted to Cabinet, with 16 ministers now coming from the Liberal Party (one more than under the second Baird ministry) and seven coming from the Nationals.

The reshuffle represents a major change to the make up of the NSW Cabinet as well as the strategic direction of the new Berejiklian Government, as it embarks on the second half of this parliamentary term.
