26 May | Federal Election Wrap - Labor to form Government
"I want Australia to continue to be a country that, no matter where you live, who you worship, who you love or what your last name is, that places no restrictions on your journey in life" - Anthony Albanese
OVERVIEW
Anthony Albanese has claimed victory for the Labor Party last night, returning the ALP to power after almost 10 years in opposition.
Here's what you need to know:
Mr Albanese will replace Scott Morrison as Prime Minister, making him the 31st Prime Minister of Australia.
Labor has won in 72 seats, with 14 seats still being too close to call. It has won nine seats from the Coalition, including four in WA.
Labor is in the running in 12 of those 14 remaining undecided seats. The maximum achievable majority for Labor now stands at 84.
The Coalition has won 50 seats, and is in the running in 13 of those seats. The maximum number of seats the Coalition will hold is 63 seats.
The 'Teal Independents' have won six new seats, in addition to the seats held by Zali Steggall MP, Rebekha Sharkie MP and Helen Haines MP, meaning they will hold nine seats across Victoria, NSW and WA.
In QLD, Greens have won the seats of Ryan and Griffith and are ahead in Brisbane, meaning the party could hold four seats in the lower house including Melbourne MP Adam Bandt.
Although the prospect of a minority government still exists, it seems likely the ALP will win in over the 76 seats required to form majority government.
Even if Labor wins less than 76 seats, it will be able to form Government with the support of Andrew Wilkie MP and the three confirmed Greens MPs.
Independent Dai Le appears set to defeat Kristina Keneally in the Western Sydney seat of Fowler.
Liberal candidate Jenny Ware has won the seat of Hughes in South Sydney from UAP MP Craig Kelly, and Andrew Constance is in a knife-edge contest against sitting Labor MP Fiona Phillips in the NSW South Coast seat of Gilmore.
TEAL INDEPENDENTS
The Climate 200-backed 'Teal Independents' have won in the majority of contests they participated in, winning nine seats across Victoria, NSW and WA.
Zali Steggall MP has been returned in Warringah, Rebekha Sharkie MP in Mayo and Helen Haines MP in Indi.
Sophie Scamps has won Mackellar in Sydney's Northern Beaches from Jason Falinski.
Kylea Tink has won North Sydney from Trent Zimmerman.
Allegra Spender has won Wentworth in Sydney's East from Dave Sharma.
Monique Ryan has won Kooyong in Melbourne from Josh Frydenberg.
Zoe Daniel has won Goldstein in Melbourne from Tim Wilson.
Kate Chaney has won Curtin in Perth from Celia Hammond.
Climate 200 did not back any candidates in Brisbane, but may have been in the running against the Greens in the seats of Ryan, Griffith and Brisbane.
Georgia Steele was unsuccessful in her run in the Southern Sydney seat of Hughes.
